About Bemetara

Bemetara is a city under  Bemetara district in Chhattisgarh. It came into existence on January 14, 2012 when Balod and Bemetara were separated from Durg district to become the 21st and 22nd districts of Chhattisgarh. Divided into 21 wards, this district is regarded as the largest town in the state when it comes to the land and population. The city of Bemetara is surrounded by varied geographical features like Shivnath River to the east, dense forests to the south, Maikal Hills to the north-west, the Chota Nagpur Plateau to the north and the Deccan Plateau to its southern side. Furthermore, the district is located on the total area of 2854.81 sq km and it shares its borders with seven other districts of Chhattisgarh and they are Durg, Balod Bazaar, Bilaspur, Raipur, Kawardha, Rajnandgaon and Mungeli. Bemetara is well connected to the other major cities of Chhattisgarh state through different ways of transportation, railways and roadways, in particular.

Historical Background of Bemetara

The name of Bemetara was derived from Queen Vyomtara who ruled this area for a long time. The district of Bemetara has a long historical background . According to some studies, the entire area of Durg district including Bemetara was under the rule of mauryan Emperor Ashoka. In the year 1762, the area came under the Marathas which further captured by King Bhosle in the year 1853. In ancient times, From the period of 1857 to 1906, whole Durg Tehsil was embedded in Raipur district while Bemetara was located in Simga Tehsil and Nawabgarh region was included in Bilaspur district. When Durg district was established in 1906, Bemetara was the most important one out of those three tehsils which included the regions of Nawabgarh, Berala and Saja. However, these regions have always been included in the periphery of Bemetara throughout its journey from an important tehsil to a district in 2012.

Geography of Bemetara

Bemetara is located in proximity to the centre of a large plain and thus the climate in this region is tropical wet and dry. The region experiences moderate climate for most of the periods except the months of March to June, when it remains very hot. The temperature during the summer season, especially in April & May, can reach up to 50°C and the dry with hot winds constantly blowing through the area. The monsoon season comes during the end of June and lasts up to the start of October month. The average precipitation in Bemetara falls around 1300 mm. The monsoon here is followed by the winters during which the temperature falls at 5°C. The winter season in this district remains from November to January.

Demography of Bemetara

The entire area of Bemetara district spreads across 2855 sq km in which total numbers of 7,95,334 people are residing, as per Indian Census of 2011. The final estimation of the population is taken from its five tehsils - Bemetara, Nawabgarh, Saja, Berala and Thankhamhariya. Out of its total population, there are 397546 males while 397788 are females. Moreover, the rural population is 721077 and its urban area has 74257 of the total population of Bemetara. The reports of Indian Census 2011 also mentioned that the average literacy rate of Bemetara district is 70.58% in which the tehsil of Saja has the most literate people. In addition to this, the district also has significant amount of Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) people.

The administration of Bemetara district is categorized into five tehsils (Bemetara, Nawabgarh, Saja, Berala and Thankhamhariya) in which there are 700 villages, 387 gram panchayats and seven urban regions included. Besides that, there are four development blocks in this district which named as Nawagarh, Bemetara, Berala and Saja. With a municipal council in Bemetara, the district also has seven urban towns that are Saja, Thankamhariya, Maro, Devkar, Nawagarh, Parpodi and Berela. All 700 villages of Bemetara district have been done with electrification. The responsibility of running administration in the district is owned by District Collector and District Magistrate. Economy of Bemetara

Agriculture is the main source of economy in Bemetara. The major part of the production here is done on Kharif crops mainly paddy & soyabean and Rabi crops mainly wheat, gram, mustard etc. In fact, the district is countrywide famous as "Unhari District" due to the large production of Unhari here. Majority of the inhabitants of this region are indulge in some or other kind of agricultural work. Besides that, limestone and an important stone, Quartz, can be found at many places of this district. Trees of acacia, mango, neem, pipal, kahua and khamar are standing tall throughout this place. Bemetara district has no major industry but has small and macro industries which related with pots, bamboo, brick and molasses work. Few rice mills and pulses mills are also located here. However, small scale industries of slipper, soaps and spices are also establishing in Bemetara.

Local Chhattisgarhi people are belonged to Kalar, Swarnkar, Kurmi, Koshta, Bramhan and Satnami communities. However, trading communities like Agarwals, Jains, Jayaswals, Marwaris and Gujaratis are also residing in this district. The people belonged to Muslim religion are also living here particularly in its Bajar Para Masjid Gali. Tourist Places in Bemetara

Bemetara is preferred by many travelers as its hoe to numerous ancient temples. The most famous temples in Bemetara are Mata Bhadrakali Temple, Mata Shitla Temple and Sita Devi Temple. Mata Bhadrakali Temple is also referred to as "Mata Bhadrakali ki Pavan Bhumi" and a fair is conducted here twice in a year during the days of Navaratra. Mata Shitla Temple is an ancient temple and it is a three storied and large temple. Sita Devi Temple is located in Devarbija Village of Bemetara and it is believed that Lord Shri Rama and Mata Sita stayed in this place during their 'Vanvas' (exile). Apart from that, one can also take pleasure of natural attractions located nearby to Bemetara. The most preferred of them are Chitrakot Falls, Laxman Temple at Sirpur, Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanha National Park and Champaran.

Transportation in Bemetara

Bemetara district is well connected through road and rail to the major cities of Chhattisgarh like Bilaspur, Jabalpur, Raipur, Durg and Kawardha. National Highway (NH) 12A is passing through this district that connects the state capital, Raipur, to Jabalpur city. However, this region is also placed near to two state highways in which the first one is passing from Bemetara to Durg and the second one is from Kumhari to Mungeli. The local transportation is also here in the form of hand rickshaws and auto rickshaws. Bemetara has a railway line but don't have its own railway station. The nearest one is Tilda Railway Station which is place around 35 km from the district while Raipur Railway Station is located at a distance of 66 km. Nevertheless, a new railway line is proposed which named as Durg-Bemetara-Mungeli-Bilaspur line. The nearest airport to Bemetara is Raipur Airport located almost 66 km distance from this district.
