Bemetara is a city under Bemetara district in Chhattisgarh. It came into existence on January 14, 2012 when Balod and Bemetara were separated from Durg district to become the 21st and 22nd districts of Chhattisgarh. Divided into 21 wards, this district is regarded as the largest town in the state when it comes to the land and population. The city of Bemetara is surrounded by varied geographical features like Shivnath River to the east, dense forests to the south, Maikal Hills to the north-west, the Chota Nagpur Plateau to the north and the Deccan Plateau to its southern side. Furthermore, the district is located on the total area of 2854.81 sq km and it shares its borders with seven other districts of Chhattisgarh and they are Durg, Balod Bazaar, Bilaspur, Raipur, Kawardha, Rajnandgaon and Mungeli.
